This is not your mama’s meatloaf, but it is my mama’s meatloaf and it has a rich bbq sauce that makes it extra special!
Everyone has their favorite meatloaf recipe. Whether it’s your grandmother’s recipe, mom’s recipe, dad’s recipe, or Aunt Martha’s, we all have a recipe that we grew up with and in more cases than not, that is our favorite. Personally, I am not a huge meatloaf fan. I have never ordered meatloaf in a restaurant and it’s not something I crave. That being said, I can honestly say that this is one meatloaf I really enjoy. Of course I do, it’s my mama’s meatloaf and if our mama made it for us, it automatically falls into the comfort food category.
My mom has always been an excellent cook. It seems no matter how hard I try, I can’t make any of her dishes taste quite as good as when she makes them. Maybe it’s the love she pours into everything she makes. I pour love into everything I make also, but it’s not her love. It’s Shannon’s love, and not mama’s love and they taste just a little bit different.
My favorite thing about this recipe is the homemade barbecue sauce. It’s absolutely wonderful and the epitome of comfort food. This meatloaf is especially good with some good green beans (try this recipe for something different) and mashed potatoes. You can also make the sauce with a number of different meats, it’s not just for meatloaf! Try it on grilled chicken breasts, burgers, pork roast, or even with salmon.
To make the meatloaf, place the ground beef in a bowl with a slightly beaten egg, some seasoned salt, some finely chopped yellow onion and some torn or cubed bread. I like to use whole wheat, cut the crusts off, and cut into small cubes.
Get your hands in there and mix everything together. Don’t use a spoon, use your hands. It’s fun to get messy in the kitchen. Try it, I bet you’ll like it! After the mixture is thoroughly combined, place it into a loaf pan and shape it into a loaf.
For the sauce, just combine ketchup, brown sugar, dry mustard, allspice and some ground cloves in a sauce pan and heat until the sugar has dissolved and the sauce has a slight bubble to it.
It doesn’t look pretty now, but once it’s heated, it has a beautiful, deep color to it.
Invite some friends over, brew some iced tea, and talk about the favorite dishes your mamas made. Maybe even do a recipe swap. Share the love! Even if this is not your mama’s meatloaf, I hope you will give the recipe a try and come on back and leave a comment and let me know how you liked it and snap a photo and tag #ketchumkitchen on Social Media.

Who doesn’t love a good meatloaf? And that BBQ sauce looks like the perfect combo of sweet and savory!
The sauce is amazing! I definitely recommend it with the meatloaf, but you can put it on just about anything 🙂
