French Onion Burgers

Today I’ve got a fun recipe for you. My French Onion Burgers take a simple burger to a whole new level. Back in the day, my roommate and I were addicted to watching Rachel Ray’s 30 Minute Meals. I loved how down to earth she was and she always had the most fun burger recipes. Ever since, I’ve enjoyed challenging myself to make creative burgers right at home. Unfortunately, the appeal of Rachel isn’t the same for me anymore. I miss the old Rachel, but I still have several of her cookbooks and she taught me a lot over the years. Who else has given themselves the challenge to carry as much as possible from the pantry or fridge without dropping anything? Come one, I know I’m not the only one!

I’ve been building a collection of fun burgers here on the blog for you to enjoy! In addition to these French Onion Burgers, you can find:

I’ve got lots of other great burger recipes brewing in my noggin, but I’ve tested and perfected (in my mind at least!) the French Onion Burger. This baby has grilled onions, French Onion soup mix and an A1 mayo blend. Personally, I don’t care for A1 on my steak (I’m a purist when it comes to my steak), but it’s really good on this burger. Hamburgers are so great for easy weeknight dinners. In the summertime, grill them outside and sit on the deck with a cold beverage sharing laughs with loved ones. In the colder months, cook on the indoor grill or the George Foreman Grill for easy cleanup and a meal that is quick and easy to prepare.

I always make my burgers with lean ground beef (91/9) that I purchase at Costco in 1 pound “logs” for a very reasonable price. I store them in the upright freezer in the garage and can throw together tacos, sloppy joes, a marinara meat sauce or a quick burger on a busy night.

To make these French Onion burgers, start off by sautéing two thinly sliced yellow onions in Olive Oil until they are caramelized. You can cook them until the desired doneness. I like to pull them when the edges are brown and crisp and they are completely translucent. They lose their sharpness and get sweeter as they cook down.

The meat mixture just contains two ingredients. One pound of lean ground beef and one packet of French Onion Soup Mix. If you’ve been following my blog for any length of time now, you know that I buy the store brand of standard ingredients whenever possible. I save money and can’t even tell the difference in quality if it’s a basic ingredient.

I always enjoy making variations of mayonnaise. I’ve got a blog post on making mayonnaise 6 ways you can check out for some inspiration. For this burger I made a flavored mayonnaise with A1 steak sauce and it’s a winner! The A1 sauce gives the mayo a little kick, but it’s still creaming and smooth.

It’s also important to grill your hamburger buns when making a hearty burger like this one. Grilling the buns not only adds extra flavor, but the crispy outsides will help keep the buns from getting soggy from the moisture of the onions and burger patties. No one likes a soggy bun! I just use the same grill pan that I use for the burgers. Just butter one side of the buns and lightly toast them on the grill pan.

Monterey Jack cheese is my favorite cheese with these French Onion Burgers, but Swiss would also be a good option as well. Just use a mild cheese that isn’t overpowering. There is plenty of flavor going on and you don’t want the cheese to compete with the onion.
